In the area of aging Dr. Card completed a study of the effects of reaching 65 (the age for Medicare eligibility) on health care utilization and health outcomes. He is also currently working on a study of the effects of employer pension contributions on employee savings behavior.

Other topics of ongoing research in the past year include a study of the effect of the elimination of affirmative action on the college application behavior of minority students in California and Texas, a study of the effects of racial segregation in high schools on the school performance of black students, and a study of the effect of changes in the unemployment insurance benefit formula in the state of California on the probability that unemployment workers file for unemployment benefits.
